Episode 63. Festivus. For the rest of us.

Download podcast here.

This week, the format is a little different. Simply put: Darin already left us for Christmas vacation and Braeden is left to his own devices. So he airs his grievances in fabulous Festivus fashion - complaining all about the idiots sending death threats to Dan Slott over a comic they haven't even read yet, complaining about all the people who don't buy Saga like it's going out of style every month, and not-really-complaining about how great Remender and Romita's Captain America book is.

Then, we turn the mic in Darin's direction, as he interviews his nephew Brigham all about why he loves superheroes and tells us all about the superhero he created. Finally, we wrap up with some Matthew action, reviewing Giant-Size X-Men. (And stay tuned until the very end for the easter egg of Matthew goodness!)

Breakdown
Grievance: death threats 00:00 - 00:05
Grievance: go buy Saga 00:05 - 00:16
Rave: Captain America still rules 00:16 - 00:21
Darin interviews his nephew Brigham 00:21 - 00:43
Matthew and Jordan talk Giant-Size X-Men 00:43 - 00:48

Have a happy and safe holiday, dear listeners - and happy reading.

Episode 62. We're normal folk.

Download podcast here.

Back together. We missed you guys last week. Chatting this week: Death of the Family - definitive Batman story? Gail Simone and the improper treatment of comic book creators by the big 2. Avengers Assemble and lots of tangents because of it - Hawkeye, comic book cleavage, feng shui shops, how many times Darin has watched The Dark Knight Rises, et cetera. Also: Man of Steel trailer chat with Cassi. We prognosticate the heck out of that thing. Darin talks about how Henry Cavill's beard inspired his own. Ultimate X-Men is pretty great.

Sorry we couldn't do last week. Hopefully won't happen again. (Need to build up the backlog of special episodes, clearly.) Chat here, Facebook, Twitter, or e-mail. Because of the loves. The loves, I say.

Episode 61. Let's go be adults.

Download podcast here.

Finally, Darin and Braeden got to see each other. It's been like two or three weeks, which is shameful. But we didn't have time to have a full episode, with all the normal stuff we do. We just sat down at the dinner table with Braeden's wife Cassi. And chatted. We talk Thanksgiving, comics, life, the Antelope Lending Library (donate please!), and all sorts of stuff.

How was your Thanksgiving? What did you think of this episode? It was pretty loose in its format, that's for sure. But it was also lots and lots of fun. (Except for the whiny puppy parts.) Talk to us here. Facebook. Twitter. E-mail. You know the score. We love you.

Episode 60. My Mom the Potential Hoarder.

Download podcast here.

No, this episode is not really about our moms as potential hoarders. It's ACTUALLY about the 2005 movie Elektra. But it ends up being about our moms. And their potential as hoarders. Because that's how we roll around here. Darin and I eviscerate the horror that is Elektra, and we barely make it out alive the other side. Believe us - it's not pretty. But it is funny. Oh yeah! And don't miss out on Matthew's best review yet - X-Men #9. It's a winner all around.

What are you thinking about? Tell us. Here. Facebook. Twitter. E-mail. We want to know. We'll have a normal episode for you next week, kids. Promise.

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

Episode 59. The Cutoff Hoodie.

Download podcast here.

Hey, we got together after all. Over the Skype. Stupid the internets - wasn't working earlier in the week. But we made it work. We talk: more Superior Spider-Man prognostications. Thoughts on Age of Ultron. What is Punk Rock Jesus all about? How will Murphy end it? Avengers Assemble subverts gender expectations in a beautiful way. We dissect the other Marvel NOW titles. Braeden contemplates dumping Buffy comics, which is a madness unlike any other. Saga is always exceptional, and this month is no exception. And much more - you know how it is. Also, Matthew's review of X-Men #8.

What are you thinking about our new version? Worth it? Let us know here, Facebook, Twitter, e-mail. You know the system.

Monday, November 12, 2012

Episode 58. That's so Green Lantern.

Download podcast here.

Big news: re-imagining the podcast. Check back weekly for new episodes - no more five-days-a-week. Thoughts on the Star Wars Episode VII writer announcement. Darin talks about why Rotworld is a great crossover and why he mancrushes Snyder and Lemire. Braeden explains what Avengers VS. X-Men will mean for Marvel going forward. More Superman love from you-know-who. Trepidation about Marvel NOW. You'll still hear Matthew's reviews every week. So listen to X-Men #7 as he sees it. And other things.

Let us know your thoughts on the re-invention of the podcast. Here. Facebook. Twitter. E-mail. It's a thing.

Special: Superhero Party!

Download podcast here.

I guess we'll have to see...) Consequently, they interviewed the attendees and much fun was had by all.

All the materials we produced for the party that we mention in the podcast will show up in a blog post in a few days - so keep your eyes peeled for that blog post if you, too, want to have an amazing superhero themed party. It doesn't even have to be for kids. We promise.

So take a listen, enjoy this small episode, and have a good Wednesday at your comic store! Come say happy birthday on our Twitter or Facebook pages, or e-mail us at talk@betweenthebubbles.com. It'll make us feel special.

Special: Fantastic Four Movie Review

Download podcast here.

We've been hard at work delivering you daily doses of quality entertainment, but we may have hit it out of the park today. In this special episode, regular panelist and geek god Braeden is joined by his sister Vanessa, to suffer so you don't have to - they watched, in excruciating detail, the 2005 film Fantastic Four. (We know. It's a sacrifice of love.) They then give their honest (if blunt) review of this "wonderful" piece of cinema, right down to the nitty gritty of the whole thing. It's not pleasant - but it sure is funny.

So take a listen. Agree? Disagree? How do you feel about the Fantastic Four movie? Was it a trainwreck? A diamond in the rough? Let us know here, at our Facebook or Twitter pages, or e-mail us at talk@betweenthebubbles.com. Come on. You know you loathed this movie as much as we did.

You'll hear plenty of compelling arguments from teams on both sides, and perhaps you'll think of these two films in ways you haven't before.

To recap, our panelists are: Braeden and Darin (are you surprised?), their friend Kelsey, Darin's twin brother Devin, and Braeden's sister Vanessa. They finally get to the nitty-gritty - which movie has the most lasting power? It's a pretty great discussion.

Special: Avengers VS Dark Knight Rises panel, part 1

Download podcast here.

Here it is, as a part of our big 2.0 relaunch! We've been teasing you with this for weeks, but finally we have our big panel discussion of The Avengers VS The Dark Knight Rises - well, at least, the first half of it. Hear us talk about which film has a better story, which has a better villain, and much more - and come back Friday for the second half, where we discuss best female lead, which film we'll be watching in twenty years, and much more!

Our panelists are: Braeden and Darin (of course), their friend Kelsey, Darin's twin brother Devin, and Braeden's sister Vanessa. They really dig in and have a hearty discussion. (Also, love that flub-up at the beginning - Braeden thought it would be funnier to leave it there. Because that's how he rolls.)

Breakdown
Intro: 00:00 - 00:08
Best story: 00:08 - 00:21
Best villain: 00:21 - 00:38
Best action: 00:38 - 00:50

Stay tuned Friday for the second half of the panel, and let us know which side of the great divide you fall on - are you an Avengers fanboy? A Dark Knight Rises acolyte? Tell us here, on Facebook or Twitter, or e-mail us at talk@betweenthebubbles.com. You'll be glad you did.

Short 04: Watchmen and Before Watchmen.

Download podcast here.

We have a very special treat for you today, intrepid listeners! Join Braeden and guest host Jarrod for this in-depth look at Watchmen, widely regarded as one of the most important stories told in the graphic medium! It's also been the subject of many debates: are comics too adult? What rights should creators have? What rights should the publishers maintain? Additionally, Jarrod gives us his impression of the Before Watchmen miniseries, which focus on many of the characters of the original to tell more of their back story. Are the essential reading? Glorified fan fiction? Or somewhere in between? Listen to find out!

Original Watchmen talk: 00:00 - 00:11
Before Watchmen thoughts: 00:11 - 00:27

Let us know what you think of Watchmen - is it worthy of the hype it gets? Is it a seminal classic, or is it just a footnote that has been surpassed by other tales? And if you're reading the new series, let us know which ones you like, which ones you hate, and everything in between! Join in the conversation here, at our Facebook and Twitter pages, or e-mail us at talk@betweenthebubbles.com. We'd love to hear your opinions!

Episode 12: Darin loves Superman.

Download podcast here.

New episode! Darin stays home today. (Recuperating from a nasty bout of studying for his boards.) But he's kind enough to send us in some thoughts on this week's releases, as well as tell us all why we need to repent and love Superman the way he does. (Braeden couldn't disagree more, but they'll have to devote an entire episode to a review of Superman Returns if he wants to really get into it.) Also: Braeden and guest host Jarrod talk news! Cosplay weddings. Wonder Woman show? Marvel NOW teasers. Tons of reviews! Braeden was mostly disappointed with his pull list this week, with a few exceptions. (Hawkeye? Punisher? Ultimate Spider-Man? He's looking at you.) Darin also wasn't super sold on most of them . . . Earth 2. What a waste.

Breakdown
Comics news: 00:00 - 00:09
Comics reviews: 00:09 - 00:48

Also: stay tuned this week for a special short all about Watchmen and the Before Watchmen series with our special guest panelist, Jarrod! It'll be a blast. Plus, we've got some exciting changes in the pipeline for the soon-to-be-revealed relaunch of Between the Bubbles! So make sure you keep your eyes peeled. And, as always, let us know what you're reading and what you're thinking here, at our Facebook or Twitter pages, or hit us up at talk@betweenthebubbles.com. Episode 11: the do-over.

Download podcast here.

Imagine this scenario: Darin and Braeden finally have some decent microphones and are excited about using them. Braeden, not thinking clearly, turns the sensitivity of the mics up so they can hold them further away from their mouths while recording - you know, normal things. Then, Braeden doesn't check the recordings during the episode's creation, realizing to his horror (and after Darin has headed back to his place, an hour away) that the mics picked each other up and there's this nasty echo nonsense going on. Bad news, bears. (If only they'd have had one of those buttons pictured above.)

Nevertheless, by the power of Skype recordings, they have the power (AKA a re-recorded episode)! Blech. Hopefully the final product is still good, despite our having to produce it twice. Lots of reviews! News about possible Justice League directors. Captain Marvel is unquestionably the best ever! Green Lantern spoilers abound! Braeden craves more Prophet than he's currently getting. And more!

Breakdown
Comics news: 00:00 - 00:14
Comics reviews: 00:14 - 00:56
Weekly features: 00:56 - 01:12

This'll be our last episode together for at least one week (and maybe two, depending on how Darin's exams go), but Braeden will be here next week with some exciting interviews, a guest host, and we've also got some surprises up our sleeves for the coming week - stay tuned! And, as always, let us know what you're reading and what you're thinking here, at our Facebook or Twitter pages, or hit us up at talk@betweenthebubbles.com. Drop us a line, and we'll send you digital high fives.

Short 03: What the heck is Valiant comics, anyway?

Download podcast here.

Sometimes, people have a lot of time on their hands and lots of ambition. Those people can turn to making custom action figures of properties that were canceled a decade ago. (Evidence? See above.) However, sometimes that nostalgia can work for something great, as in the case of the resurrection of Valiant comics. What's that? You've never heard of Valiant comics? Well then, pay attention and you'll learn a thing or two.

Breakdown
Valiant's history: 00:00 - 00:06
Reviews of their current titles: 00:06 - 00:23

We'll be honest - both of us are enjoying the Summer of Valiant! If this is what happens when motivated people are given venture capital, then by all means, let's get the money flowing. This is a stellar example of what can happen when old properties are resurrected right.

What do you think of the Valiant relaunch? Are you picking up any of the books? Join the conversation on our Facebook or Twitter pages, and or contact us at talk@betweenthebubbles.com with any insights, comments, or questions you might have! Because we're here for you, dear listeners - and we just want to say hi.

Episode 10: Spider-Man is old. Like, really old.

Download podcast here.

New episode! Amazing Spider-Man 50th anniversary issue. Worth the hype? Worth the six bucks? Guess you'll have to listen to find out. Brubaker is leaving us high and dry! Rob Liefeld is a jerk! Creator owned books are the best? Fact. Damian Wayne is a troublemaker. Braeden loved the Punisher this week! Darin loved Darth Vader too. All this and then some!

Breakdown
Comics news: 00:00 - 00:13
Comics reviews: 00:13 - 00:55
Weekly features: 00:55 - 01:06

On top of this scrumptious episode, we recorded a very special panel episode today - but you all don't get to hear it for another few weeks. Because of reasons. Reasons we choose to keep to ourselves (it'll all become clear soon). In the meantime, let us know if there's anything you'd like us to talk about and join the conversation on our Facebook or Twitter pages, and or contact us at talk@betweenthebubbles.com with any insights, comments, or questions you might have! Because why not.
